Learn More About Tims Ford Lake

Tims Ford Lake is a 16 square mile lake in southern Middle Tennessee that was built between 1966 and 1971 by damming up the Elk River.  The lake includes approximately 250 miles of shoreline and is approximately 30 miles long.  There are 4 marinas on the lake - each rents boats, a 3000 acre State Park called Tims Ford State Park, and even a famous golf course called the Bear Trace that is on a peninsula on the lake.

The lake has six islands (which were hills before the lake was filled) that you can visit by boat or kayak. You can even camp on the islands with a reservation.  The cities surrounding the lake were all established in the early 1800’s and have civil war heritage.  There are two cities with historical squares — Lynchburg and Winchester.  Each of these has a historical courthouse as the center of their square with historical buildings surrounding in it housing restaurants and shops.  

The lake was built on top of two farming communities, Awalt and Owl Hollow.  Both had their own unique charm and displaced locals who grew up in those towns still live by the lake — the cemeteries were moved aside from the Shasteen Cemetery that was on a hill now called Devil Step Island.
