Sweet Pea Fashions Boutique in Livingston, Tennessee, is sometimes mistaken for a children’s store or bakery because of it’s name. In fact the high-end clothing boutique was named after owners, Lori and Todd Matthews’, pet name for their grandchildren, “sweet peas”. The boutique is well-stocked with beautiful women’s items such as clothing, handbags, shoes, outerwear, jewelry, perfume, candles, gift ideas, and many more items, too numerous to mention.
Lori & Todd Matthews initially opened Sweet Pea Fashions Boutique in 2018, going from a dining room table project to a basement store. The business grew over time, and they knocked down a wall to expand the space. While the shop saw great success in their basement, the biggest disadvantage was their home’s driveway in bad weather. So after some thought, they knew their next move was the short distance to Downtown Livingston. Lucky for them Ray Evans had a building for rent, but he offered to sell it instead. Lori and Todd bought the building, and so the adventure in Downtown Livingston began for their boutique.
The present Sweet Pea Fashions Boutique building itself came with a LOT of history. The 100-year-old Sinclair oil sign that was discovered by Evans when he purchased the building and began renovations was a historical gold mine! It also contains what is thought to be a portion of a wall from the old jail thought long gone. In fact, the bricks in the wall of the old jail are believed to have been handmade locally. Lori & Todd said the task of restoring and sharing these pieces of history and adding their family business to that location was quite a challenge! Todd says the challenge of an older building without completely gutting it is adding modern heating. “Solid brick and concrete walls and floors have a cool feel. Much easier to cool than heat! We are looking at awnings, something that fits the shop and the Downtown Livingston area. We want it to stay a hallmark town!”
Last year, Lori and Todd purchased the fixtures and inventory of Dry Hollow Boutique and made it a part of Sweet Pea Fashions Boutique. It is their hope that Lori will make the boutique her retirement job after moving to Downtown Livingston. She currently works as an administrator for an engineering/loss prevention company. Todd works with doenetwork.org and pursues his love of true crime and forensics, as well as serving the community as a substitute teacher. This couple definitely stays busy!
Sweet Pea has a little bit of everything, and as Lori and Todd like to support local businesses, several items are locally made by artists including their candles, jewelry, and perfumes.
