Visit Our Site

Held annually on the 4th weekend of October, Mountain Makins is a folk life and crafts festival celebrating the traditions of Appalachia through traditional music and dance, storytelling, regional authors, fine art, juried crafts, skilled demonstrations, a variety of delicious food, children's activities, and more. The festival takes place inside and outside the Rose Center, an 1892 school building that is now a historical museum and cultural arts center. There are two stages of music both Saturday and Sunday. More than 65 juried crafters show their best works:  Crafters exhibit throughout the building and surrounding grounds. Crafts typically represented include cedar items, basketry, stained glass, blown glass, clay sculptures, fiber art, fine art, woodworking, dried flowers, jewelry, bath products, oils and herbs, pottery, wood furniture, gourd art, and much more. Demonstrators bring to life traditional crafts during the festival. The demonstrations include broom making, woodturning, basket weaving, apple butter making, quilting, and blacksmithing.
