Memphis in May has hosted the city's largest events for over 40 years now. The month-long festival focuses on contributing to the economic growth of the community, fostering civic pride, promoting awareness of Memphis heritage and building international relationships.
Kicking the festivities off during the first weekend of May, the Beale Street Music Festival has witnessed talented musicians such as Neil Young, Ed Sheeran, Van Morrison, Beck, Bob Dylan, The Avett Brothers, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Foo Fighters, Willie Nelson and many more grace the stage. The three-day music festival, which features four stages and over 60 acts, is best known for its eclectic mix spanning all genres.
International Week follows by saluting a different honored country every year with programs, art exhibits, lectures and more. These unique experiences offer the opportunity to bring Memphis to the world and the world to Memphis.
Known as America's most prestigious barbecue contest, the World Championship Barbecue Cooking Competition is a four-day event that hosts the best pitmasters from around the globe duking it out for BBQ greatness. With over 250 teams contending in one of three categories (rib, shoulder, whole hog), the competition is always fierce.
Celebrate Memphis and the Great American River Run Half Marathon & 5K round out the final weekend of May. A salute to all things 901, Celebrate Memphis brings the best music, food and vendors to one location to celebrate the city, while the half marathon and 5K races take runners through the streets of downtown Memphis and along the banks of the mighty Mississippi River.
