In 1890 John G. Greer opened a store on Grove Street in downtown Loudon. Products included home commodities and farm implements to serve the farmers and other residents of the area. Greer had moved from Maryville, where he had worked in his uncle’s home store learning the retail trade. After moving to Loudon he married Bettie Carmichael, member of a pioneer family in the community.

In 1900 Mr. Greer had taken on a partner, his brother-in-law James Carmichael. The partners built an extension in 1914 at 604 Grove Street, the first of numerous expansions on the block facing the Courthouse.

1925 marked the arrival of the 2nd generation, as John G. Greer’s sons J. Barksdale and James Carmichael Greer bought out their Uncle Bliz' share of the business. During the next 40 years, J. Barksdale Greer led the business into major growth in furniture, appliances and many other products for the home.

In the 1950’s a 3rd generation joined the firm. John C. Greer and his brother-in-law Hamill B. Carey developed a very successful and enjoyable partnership based on customer service and consumer credit options. By the turn of the century the hardware department had been sold to another retailer, and the company dedicated it’s product mix to furniture and mattresses.

Today Bo Carey continues the family tradition as the 4th generation owner and manager. He credits success to what he learned from his ancestors….First, offer quality name brands made in America like Lazyboy & Serta. Secondly, deliver small town customer service which exceeds anything the big box stores can offer. And finally, take advantage of low overhead by guaranteeing prices well below the high rent competition in Knoxville.

John G. Greer’s company motto in 1890 was simple. "The best way to avoid a misunderstanding is to first have a firm understanding." Greer's Home Furnishings maintains that simple approach to business 125 years later.
