The shop's namesake, Uncle Lem, lived his whole life next to Jake's Creek where he was a farmer and bee keeper. Lem was the last "life lease" resident in the Great Smokey Mountains National Park and was the feature of several articles by Carson Brewer and the subject of an oil painting by Terry Chandler. Upon his death in 1984, Lem left his estate in a trust to the Tennessee Baptist Children's Homes because Mimmie (Lem's wife) would've liked that. Uncle Lem lived a simple life, a honest life, a meaningful life, a mountain life.
