This imposing mansion, which now houses a local funeral home, was the Civil War-era residence of Robert L. Caruthers. Caruthers was elected governor of Tennessee in 1862, but was unable to take office due to the federal occupation and the appointment of Andrew Johnson as federal Military Governor. The politically prominent Caruthers later served in the Confederate legislature and helped to reopen Cumberland University once the fighting stopped.
